Description

A type specimen is a document used by printers and type founders to present their catalogues. Initially produced as single sheets, it evolved into books as industrialization and rising literacy expanded typographic styles. Today, specimens mostly exist in digital form. This publication is both a type specimen and an atlas: a collection of letterforms mapping ten years of typographic creation at ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne. Across its Bachelor and Master programs, over four hundred graduates have explored drawing, spacing, and coding type. The result spans classical text faces, experimental forms, global scripts, and display designs, reflecting typography’s cultural diversity and ECAL’s role as an international crossroads of teaching, research, and practice.
