Description

Boys' Love (BL) has expanded beyond manga and novels into anime, games, and fan works, establishing its own unique cultural sphere. At the same time, BL has predominantly been discussed within the contexts of narrative, gender, and sexuality. This special feature re-examines BL expression through the lens of "design," focusing on how "intimacy" and "relationships" are rendered visually.
Centering on BL manga from the 2010s onward, this issue showcases over 50 book cover designs. Through composition, color palette, typography, and bookbinding techniques that express the sense of distance between two characters, we analyze how "intimacy" and "relationships" have been given visual form. Additionally, the feature includes commentary from designers, an interview with manga artist Soraimone, and written contributions from scholars and critics including Yukari Fujimoto, Mari Nishihara, Akiko Mizoguchi, and Timon Screech—offering a deep dive into the richness of BL expression and its appeal as a visual culture.
