Description

Magazine C is a chair documentary magazine that selects a plum icon chair and introduces a design and lifestyle centered on it.

Magazine C, co-created by Grandeclip and brand-based periodical Magazine B, is a documentary magazine that focuses on one iconic chair in every issue, introducing the design and lifestyle people build around it. Through a deep dive into the industry and chairs of all kinds—from ones seen on the street to icons that have shaped public spaces—Magazine C aims to shine a light on designers, brands, manufacturers, collectors, and chair enthusiasts, as well as uncover how each design has changed contemporary life.

This issue:

Designed in 1973 by Michel Ducaroy, the Togo broke away from the conventions of the traditional sofa. Its distinctive pleated surface, low-to-the-ground seating, and all-foam construction introduced a level of comfort and innovation unlike anything seen in contemporary sofa design. Created amid the social and cultural shifts of the 1960s and 1970s, when people longed for new ways of living and thinking, the Togo embodied the spirit of its era. That appeal remains as relevant today as ever. Rediscovered through social media during the pandemic and propelled to renewed popularity, the Togo has become more than a piece of furniture—it now stands as a cultural icon representing freedom, creativity, and a spirit of experimentation.

In Issue 8, Magazine C presents ten homes and ten Togo stories gathered from around the world, featuring everyone from fashion brand owners and musicians to film production designers and DJs. The issue also visits the manufacturing facilities of Ligne Roset to closely examine every stage of the Togo’s production process, while highlighting ten bold and experimental sofa designs from the 1970s—the decade in which the Togo was born. In addition, readers will discover a wide range of perspectives on the Togo, including insights from a curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs on its status as a popular icon, and an exploration by a fashion specialist of the creativity and experimental style that define the Togo today.
