Description

This is a collection of works by Japanese contemporary artist Shinro Ohtake. It features drawings presented in the exhibition “Yaba na Gogo” (Dangerous Afternoon) held at NADiff, timed to coincide with his large-scale retrospective “Zenkei 1955–2006” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006.

In the summer of 1980, Ohtake visited Hong Kong. Overwhelmed by what he described as an “astounding chaos,” a mysterious entity he called the “Hong Kong Leaf” took root in part of his frontal lobe. During his second stay in Hong Kong, on a certain day under a fiercely dazzling sun, a phrase suddenly flashed through his mind: “Yabee, this afternoon here…” — and that moment sparked the birth of this series.

While writing “Nega na Yoru” (Negative Night) in the mid-1990s, the long-dormant “Hong Kong Leaf” began to stir again, leading him to create around 260 drawings in black ink with a pen. This book presents a curated selection of those works. The striking book design, featuring a thick cardboard cover and hand-drawn title, is also by Ohtake himself.
