本書的結構清晰，副標題即構成了本書的三大主題:歷史、理論和實踐。

第1章介紹了批判性設計的基本問題，澄清了人們關於批判性設計的疑惑與誤解，概述了批判性設計的研究現狀。
第2章介紹批判性設計的簡要發展歷程，這一部分研究的結論指出：與普遍誤解不同，批判性設計這一領域的實踐與研究並不是一個全新或新興的領域，至少有40多年的歷史積累。
第3章梳理了批判性設計實踐賴以運行的理論基礎以及隨實踐展開而衍生出的各種新的理論。
第4章強調了批判性設計應該堅持以設計為中心而不是以藝術或視覺文化為導向的分析模式，並對“功能”這一概念進行了全面地解析。
第5章立足於實踐案例，按照差異化的諷刺方法、諷刺特徵以及相關反應，將當代批判性設計實踐區分為3種類型，分別是強調政治性的關聯性設計(associative design)、借鑒 STS理論對新興技術與設計的關係進行謹慎推演的思辨設計(speculative design)、強調批判性語言形式對社會文化進行批判的批判性設計 (critical design)。上述分類方式以及以此建構起的批判性設計分類學是本書的主要創新。
第6章作為結論部分，梳理了批判性設計為設計學科做出的貢獻以及與主流設計實踐的相互關係，為讓當前主流的設計認識論與方法論去接納批判性設計的實踐模式與理論取向提供了依據。
