Description

Shinro Ohtake, who continues to race at the forefront of contemporary art through a wide range of expressive media—picture books, photography, three-dimensional works, collage, music, and more.
Since its opening in 2009, the Naoshima bathhouse I♥湯 (I Love Yu) has attracted significant attention.
Its striking exterior features a cockpit salvaged from a scrapped ship, and the bath area evokes an underwater world…
This one-of-a-kind “artwork,” which fuses the act of bathing with the experience of art appreciation, is regarded as the ultimate masterpiece that distills and elevates Ohtake’s artistic universe.
From the exterior to the bath, changing room, and even the restroom,
it is a new form of art that allows visitors to immerse—quite literally—their entire body in Ohtake’s world.
This accordion-style visual book contains the project in its entirety.
Released urgently in anticipation of the Setouchi Triennale!

A total artwork of the 21st century has emerged.
A Wagnerian music drama?
The grand spectacle of the Beijing Olympic Stadium and its opening ceremony?
No—just a modest public bathhouse.
If you doubt it, go to Naoshima and see I♥湯 with your own eyes, the bathhouse created by Shinro Ohtake.
—Akira Asada (Asahi Shimbun, October 8, 2009)
