Description

本書在視覺文化領域構建了一個反殖民的研究框架。作者將現代性描述成視覺性與反視覺性（或“看的權利”）之間的一場持續較量，解釋了視覺性如何將權威與權力縫合在一起，從而使人們認為二者的聯繫是自然而然的。視覺性是一個出自19世紀早期的概念，指歷史的視覺化，它是西方霸權合法化的關鍵。
 
作者化用這一概念，提出了三種“視覺性複合體”，闡明了在每一種複合體的內部，權力如何通過分類、隔離和審美化而變得不證自明。同時，他也展示了被奴役者、被殖民者和反戰者是如何抵制每一種視覺性複合體的。

Nicholas Mirzoeff
美國視覺文化理論家，紐約大學媒體、文化和傳播系教授。米爾佐夫是視覺文化領域的創始人之一，其專著包括《沉默的詩歌：現代法國的耳聾、手語和視覺文化》（Silent Poetry: Deafness, Sign and Visual Culture in Modern France, 1995）、《身體圖景：藝術、現代性與理想形體》（Bodyscape: Art, Modernity and the Ideal Figure, 1995）、《視覺文化導論》（An Introduction to Visual Culture, 1999/2009）、《觀看巴比倫：伊拉克戰爭與全球視覺文化》（Watching Babylon: the War in Iraq and Global Visual Culture, 2005）、《如何觀看世界》（How to See the World, 2015）等，其編著包括《視覺文化讀本》（The Visual Culture Reader, 1998/2002）、《流散與視覺文化：表徵非洲人和猶太人》（Diaspora and Visual Culture: Representing Africans and Jews, 2001）等。
