Description

Known as "Yangge" or "Yangko," this vibrant folk dance marks the return of spring, when villages along the Yellow River in Northern Shaanxi come alive with song and movement. More than just a performance, it's a sacred ritual to honor the gods and ward off evil. In their fieldwork, the editors of Echo of Things Chinese were astounded to find that the hand-copied "Yangge diagrams" bore a striking resemblance to other folk auspicious patterns. This volume presents 167 of these diagrams, with a detailed look at the performance’s choreography and motions. It concludes with an academic exploration of Yangge through the lens of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, offering a pioneering perspective on this ancient tradition.
