本圖錄收錄 650 張取自法國國家字體研究機構未公開檔案的圖像，講述一段尚未被充分書寫的歷史——在深刻的科技變革時期中，透過多樣化的設計計畫，探索字體設計這個鮮為人知的世界；這些作品同時汲取悠久的工藝傳統，並擁抱最為激進的創新。

Atelier National de Recherche Typographique（ANRT，國家字體研究工作室） 於 1985 年由法國政府設立，旨在振興當時陷入困境的法國字體設計領域。其任務很快擴展至字體設計本身以外的字形研究與實務領域。ANRT 最初設於法國國家印刷局（Imprimerie Nationale），之後遷至巴黎的國立高等裝飾藝術學院（École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs），最終落腳於南錫的國立高等藝術與設計學院（École Nationale Supérieure d’Art et de Design）。1985 至 2006 年間，該工作室培育了約一百名學生，為法國字體設計的顯著復興做出重要貢獻。

歷經六年的停辦後，ANRT 以全新團隊與研究方向於南錫重新啟動。
本書出版於 ANRT 海報展 之際，展覽由法國文化與傳播部主辦，於 2016 年 2 月 18 日至 3 月 3 日在巴黎舉行。
