Description

“Beauty is not an end in itself, but a design strategy for inviting readers in. Beauty for its own sake is meaningless: beauty without content is an empty vessel. ” — Joost Grootens

Dutch designer Joost Grootens runs a graphic design studio called SJG, specialising in book, map and information graphic design. His architectural background has given him a working method of “zooming in and zooming out” — mastering material details while constructing an overall overview, and focusing on the dynamic relationship between the two. When dealing with complex information, he forces himself to be an outsider and understand the project from the perspective of encountering the content for the first time. He regards atlases as a way of processing information: presenting content in a nonlinear way, allowing readers to “complete” the work through independent navigation. In his design system, colour is both material — the physical presence of ink and paper — and conceptual, distinguishing themes and enabling subconscious communication. Information graphics embody a democratic ideal: coexisting visual and textual languages so that readers with different levels of literacy can understand the content. He believes that rational organisation alone is insufficient to produce meaningful books; they also require the combined negotiation of culture, politics, intuition and subconscious strategies.
