數以百萬計的雕版、活字既是印刷史的遺珍，也是當代字體設計的超大素材庫，在現代社會仍然保有鮮活的藝術價值。以歷史為藍本，通過嚴謹規範的覆刻和再設計，豐富當代字體環境、探索字體設計演變和創新的可能性，使古籍或鉛字中的字體在當今的印刷與排版環境下重煥生機，成為全球字體設計界的共識。為了總結過去在覆刻字體設計與研究中的想法和實踐流程，來自雷丁大學的字體設計學者里卡爾多（Riccardo Olocco）與米凱萊（Michele Patanè）撰寫了《复刻字体设计：字体设计的历史学方法手册》（Designing type revivals: Handbook for a historical approach to typeface design）一書，充分闡釋了深入研習字體和字形史的標準化方法，並將其應用於拉丁字母的設計中。希望通過此書，構建出一種易於覆制的實踐模式，並激勵後續的從業者、學生和學者開展更深入的批判性思考。

《复刻字体设计：字体设计的历史学方法手册》一書凝結了資深字體設計師、教師多年的研究、實踐和工作坊教學經驗，是一本西文字體覆刻設計的實用指南。它從理解覆刻概念的精髓出發，以作者的真實設計項目——De Aetna羅馬體的覆刻為線索，引導讀者系統掌握從采樣藍本字形、 分析字形量度到制作計算機字體的覆刻字體設計方法論。本書中文版由notadesign主理人陳渚及雷丁大學排版學教授、方正獎拉丁組評審傑瑞·萊昂尼達斯（Gerry Leonidas）主編，方正字庫字體設計師何詩旸擔任翻譯。

《复刻字体设计：字体设计的历史学方法手册》中文版特別邀請了劉育黎、汪文、殷葉航、鄭初陽等四位知名中文字體設計師撰文，共同探討中文字體覆刻的實踐經驗，形成了“中文字體覆刻設計的討論”這一專題。在本書中，方正字庫設計總監汪文以方正漢文正楷的覆刻為例，深入剖析了漢字覆刻設計中所面臨的技術與藝術挑戰。
