Description

Three years after the publication of Holz Bau, we turned our attention to aluminium, the latest architectural material, and our research led us to focus on American architecture. From aluminium-clad houses to skyscrapers, aluminium’ s futuristic image became increasingly evident, and it influenced the roadside diners built in the Googie and later postmodern styles. Theresulting book features 19 American and 4 Japanese architectural precedents built during the transitional period from modern to postmodern architecture, illustrated with photographs, drawings, illustrations, and cartoons. To deepen our understanding of these diverse architectures, we conducted interviews and obtained an essay from Tomoyuki Gondo, an expert in architectural production and construction methods at Tokyo University; an interview with Lloyd Kahn, author of Shelter and editor of the Shelter section of the Whole Earth Catalog; an interview with Victor Newlove, partner of Armet Davis Newlove Architects, representatives of Googie architecture; a discussion with Seng Kuan of Tokyo University and Harvard University, an expert in architectural history and theory; and a discussion with architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto. By engaging with this diverse group of individuals, we aimed to gain a better understanding of these complex architectures.
