Ann-Sofie Back, Susan Cianciolo, Mike Mills, Cosmic Wonder

Elein Fleiss, Purple Journal's editor-in-chief, speaks of Nakako Hayashi and her magazine Here and There: When I met Nakako Hayashi, she was still working for Hanatsubaki magazine. Then, in 2001 she decided to go on her own and started Here and There in the spring of 2002. The first issue came out in March of that year, and the moment I first saw it remains in my memory as an important event in the world of independent magazines.

Here and There is the magazine of one person. The fact that Nakako's name is credited as the author on the cover is not an egocentric statement but reveals the spirit in which she makes it. Some people make films, others write books or make artworks, and Nakako makes a magazine. It is her personal work and in that sense she makes it in her own way, unlike most magazines on the planet. It also means she is free from capitalistic rules, from imposed trends, from the industry of fashion. Instead, she is free to follow her desire and to link the magazine with her personal life.

The art director, Kazunari Hattori, works in close collaboration with the author, Nakako Hayashi. Each of the four issues already published have a different form and lay-out. Following are examples of what you can find in Here and There :

A travel diary about Northern Japan (#1), drawings by Mike Mills (#1), the Paris fashion week report (#1), a collection of Nakako's writings on art and fashion (#2), a Susan Cianciolo color poster drawing (#2), photos by Anne Daems and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (#2), some beautiful close up photographs of clothes (#2), the purple 10 years film diary (#3), a booklet by Bless and Susan Cicanciolo (#3), photos by Mark Borthwick and Yukinori Maeda's (#3), all sizes of stickers with artwork by Mark Borthwick, Yukinori Maeda, Susan Cianciolo, Koichi Tabata, etc. (#4), a Susan Cianciolo and a Mark Borthwick booklet (#4), Yurie Nagashima's pictures of new-born babies (#4).

Here and There #5 just came out and is dedicated to house and garden. The size is small, like a little guide-book. Mark Borthwich photographed his Brooklyn garden. Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and myself, our apartments in Paris. Nakako made a report on Kyoto gardens. Takashi Homma made beautiful photos of Nakako’s apartment and particularly the presence of Susan Cianciolo artwork.
