Description

Inujima Seirensho Art Museum Handbook — Architecture
Inujima Seirensho Art Museum Handbook — Art
— Official Two-Book Set of Inujima Seirensho Art Museum

This official two-volume handbook set offers the most comprehensive insight into the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum—one volume dedicated to Architecture, and the other to Art. Together, they provide an essential guide for understanding the museum’s philosophy, spatial design, and artistic vision.
The Architecture volume highlights the approach of architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, introducing how the museum was designed to “use what exists to create what is to be.” It explains how the architecture minimizes environmental burden by harnessing natural energy sources—such as an existing chimney, karami bricks, solar and geothermal heat—while integrating the unique industrial remains of Inujima into a regenerative, environmentally attuned spatial system.
The Art volume focuses on the vision of Yukinori Yanagi, featuring his drawings, concepts, and the ideas behind each artwork presented inside the museum. The publication reveals how the six art spaces engage in dialogue with the writings of Yukio Mishima, reflecting on Japan’s modernization, the rise and decline of Inujima’s industry, and questions about the nation’s future trajectory.
Sold as a set, these two handbooks deepen the experience of visiting Inujima by illuminating the museum’s core intersection of Heritage, Architecture, Art, and the Environment.
