Description

This book features illustrations originally drawn by Liang Sicheng for A Pictorial History of Chinese Architecture. The original drawings were generously donated to the National Central Library by Mr. Lin Zhu, who specially commissioned the library to rephotograph the works for this publication. It is no exaggeration to say that the images reproduced here surpass, in clarity and fidelity, those of the first edition published by the MIT Press, which was awarded the honor of “Outstanding American Publication” at the time.

In 1931, Liang Sicheng and his colleagues at the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture began a systematic survey and study of ancient Chinese buildings, thereby establishing the basic framework for understanding the development of traditional Chinese architecture. In 1944, toward the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Liang completed his first manuscript of History of Chinese Architecture in Lizhuang, Sichuan. Two years later, he finished the English version, A Pictorial History of Chinese Architecture. To a great extent, the success of this illustrated history lies in the richness and precision of its visual materials.

Liang’s architectural drawings uniquely combine Western architectural drafting techniques and classical aesthetics with Chinese traditions of meticulous brushwork and line drawing, allowing the elegance and structure of Chinese architecture to be represented with both precision and artistry. This distinctive visual approach stands apart among architectural history classics worldwide. Even without accompanying text, one can grasp the broad outline of China’s architectural history simply by appreciating these drawings. Particularly striking are the “composite illustrations,” in which Liang skillfully arranged plans and elevations of several representative buildings into a single integrated composition, accompanied by bilingual annotations in Chinese and English. The result is not only visually captivating but also intellectually rich—both art and documentation in one.

With the generous support of Mr. Lin Zhu, Duku Publishing has carefully restored and reproduced fifty-nine of these precious hand-drawn architectural plates for this new edition. We believe that readers who love Chinese architecture will find great aesthetic pleasure in these pages, and we hope they may also serve as inspiration and nourishment for today’s architects and students of architecture.
