Description

SHOUT is a special issue series published by Voices of Photography with no stylistic limitations. This issue contains four image compilations by four young artists from Taiwan —— Ting-Ting Cheng, Li-Chung Lee, Yun-Yi Liu and Sheng-Wen Lo. From the image culture of mass tourist consumerism to the modern variation of traditional Taiwanese temples, to the historical accounts behind the ruins of a marginal island and even the image archives of nuclear detonation sites around the world, we are moving along in this society of the spectacle, exploring, doubting and thinking about the sights and sounds that we experience…

Ting-Ting Cheng was born in 1985 in Taipei. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in advertising and public relations from Fu-Jen University, Cheng moved to London, and received her first masters degree in Photographic Studies from the University of Westminster in 2009, followed by a Masters of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2014. She was also shortlisted for the Taipei Art Award in 2011 and featured in Art Taipei 2012’s Made in Taiwan Young Artist Discovery segment. Selected by Hong Kong’s Perspective Magazine as one of the Top 40 artists in Asia, Cheng has held solo exhibitions at the Taipei Fine Art Museum, Identity Gallery in Hong Kong, Normart in Japan, Rowan Arts and Iniva in London, and the Addaya Art Centre and Luis Adelantado in Spain. Cheng’s creative interests include cultural and national identities, and the interaction between different social groups. Through the use of photography, videos, interaction and props, Cheng invites her audiences to join her in the process and the fruition of her artistic creations.

Li-Chung Lee was born in 1980 in Tainan. He graduated from the Department of Information and Communication, Chinese Culture University in 2003. In 2006, Lee was awarded the Special Jury Award of the Epson Color Imaging Contest in Japan with “Her Paradise” and held his first solo exhibition, “LaMer”, at the Tainan Fotoaura Institute of Photography in 2011. He was selected for the Kaohsiung Awards in 2012 and in 2015, he received the Next Art Taiwan award, as well as the Taoyuan Creation Award, among others. Lee used to work as a magazine graphic designer in Taipei but he has since relocated to Tainan. In recent years, he has taken an interest in the emotional details and flow of Taiwan’s popular culture. He often uses photography and cross-media forms to present the complex outlook of today’s society and the state of life. He is also deeply intrigued by the homing instincts of the pigeons and through his research, he tries to construct a path to self-dialogue on issues such as sense of belonging, fate, and the post-globalization situation.

Yun-Yi Liu was born in Taichung. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2005, Diplom from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany in 2010, and the Meisterschülerin, the highest artist diploma from Burg Giebichenstein in 2014. Between 2011 and 2017, Liu held residencies in internationally renowned art villages in Berlin, Jena and Schwalenberg, Germany, Istanbul, Turkey, as well as the Taipei Artist Village, the Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung and the Soulangh Artist Village in Tainan. Liu was awarded the received S-An Aesthetics Award (Plastic Arts category) from the S-An Cultural Foundation in 2013, the Next Art Tainan Award in 2015 and received Honorable Mention at the Taoyuan Contemporary Art Award in 2016. Her works were also acquired by the Art Bank, established by the Ministry of Culture, and the Young Artist Collection of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

Sheng-Wen Lo was born in 1987, Taiwan, currently based in the Netherlands. He is interested in contemporary human-animal relationships, and attempts to spark off debates. He uses still and moving images, video games and installations. He received his MA in Photography from AKV|St.Joost in the Netherlands, and MSc in Computer Science from the Computer Music Lab at National Taiwan University. Having also been working as a scientist, scientific values and methodologies are crucial to his works. His recent work was shown in EYE Filmmuseum and Fotofestival Naarden in The Netherlands, ICP Museum in New York, FORMAT Photo Festival in UK, Belfast Photo Festival in Northern Ireland, Organ Vida Photo Festival in Croatia, and LianZhou Foto Festival in China.
