Description

Since 2014 Hans Gremmen has been picking up abandoned playing cards from the streets, hoping to complete a deck at some point. He follows two simple rules: firstly, only single cards can be taken; secondly, if more cards from the same deck are available, he takes only the first card he sees and the Jokers (if there are any). So far he has found cards during walks in Venice, Amsterdam, Paris, London, New York, Las Vegas, and more. ‘The Incomplete Deck’ is a zine dedicated to this fascination, with a brief history of playing card design. It is also a postscript to pages 77 and 147–150 of ‘In Between: An Incomplete Index (2001–2026)’. Each copy contains a random playing card.
