本書基於思想史和文化史的批判視野，從藝術、設計的學科邊界處回溯作為歷史的包豪斯，論證這場運動在努力重建現代生活世界之體驗的過程中進行的種種實驗。同時，全書更側重於作為理念的包豪斯，透過幾位關鍵人物的特寫，深層剖析了包豪斯歷史上的幾個重要時刻與事件，揭示在此前後不斷變化的對抗性構成，以及存蓄其中的社會動能。包豪斯作為同時期先鋒派的匯聚點，充分感受到了時代的共振，它從未平覆的內在動蕩讓矛盾得以自行顯露：私我與大公、進取與回轉，鬥爭與構劃。作者將這三組在當前的創造領域仍舊持續發酵的議題，重構為包豪斯的三幕劇，分別題為“藝術與社會”“現代性之爭”“包豪斯的雙重政治”，並附上專為此書繪制的歷史圖解長卷，將變動中的社會情境和覆雜力場構建為底圖，擇要勾勒出“包豪斯十四年”的基本輪廓，其中也包括包豪斯人與歐洲其他藝術先鋒派的數次遭遇。
