Description

These monsters are the shape we are becoming
yyin. is a bilingual art publication (Chinese/English) focusing on contemporary gender issues. We invite artists from diverse fields to collaborate with designers. Through cross-disciplinary experimentation, yyin. seeks to generate new visual narratives that respond to the fluidity and complexity of gender.
Volume Two approaches the theme of “Monster”, gathering eight creative teams that focus on those indescribable, continuously emerging energies of yyin. Inspirations from Western mythology — Chimera, Medusa, and Tiamat — to Eastern folk tale, where we find a counterpart in the Clam Fairy (蚌殼精), a creature imagined in the form of a woman. Born of both water and shell, it inhabits the threshold between softness and hardness, flesh and mineral, desire and protection, embodying a liminal force of the yyin.
In this issue, we reimagine the Clam Fairy beyond gender—not as a fixed object of the gaze, but as a process of metamorphosis from within, an existence that claims bodily and emotional sovereignty.
